Review: The Naked Light | Bridget Collins

Samenvatting: 

Florence has been summoned to live with her widowed brother-in-law and wayward niece in Haltington, a village with something uncanny in the air. According to locals, the chalk face carved into the hillside protects them from malevolent spirits. So long as it is maintained, all will be well.

The First World War has decimated the men of the village, and when the Face’s last caretaker dies, her sons both lost in France, there is nobody to replace her. Still, it’s only an old wives’ tale. Isn’t it?

Kit is an artist – unconventional, androgynous and traumatized by the events of the war. She seeks peace, and a muse – will she find both in the shape of Florence?

 ‘The Face calls things to it,’ Phoebe said, ‘and this house is in their path. You have to be careful.’

Mijn mening: 
Als je andere boeken van Bridget Collins heb gelezen, denk je misschien al te weten wat je kan verwachten. Ik kan je vertellen dat dit boek al je verwachtingen zal overtreffen! Collins is niet bang om belangrijke thema's te verkennen en de nare dagelijkse dingen een plek te geven in haar verhalen. Ik vond dat in dit boek, erg goed tot recht komen. Daarnaast zou ik dit boek omschrijven als historical horror in tegenstelling tot haar eerdere boeken die ik historical fantasy zou noemen. Ik vond het een heerlijk boek om te lezen in de winter: 10/10

Wat ik leuk vond: 
- Ik hou van Collins' schrijfstijl. Haar boeken bevatten veel abstracte magische systemen waarbij je zoveel kan verzinnen en je fantasy op de vrije loop kan laten.

Wat ik niet leuk vond: 
- Ik heb het al eerder gezegd, dat ik het minder leuk vind als een verhaal vanuit meerdere personages wordt verteld. Dit doet het verhaal zeker niet ten onder en is gewoon een persoonlijke voorkeur.
